How to Force Restart & Enter DFU Mode on iPhone 7

We all know that Apple has released its latest flagship device, called iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus. Apple says that they are the best smartphones in the market and are running the most advanced mobile operating system, the iOS 10.

Running the most advanced mobile OS means that both these phones are packed with a lot of features, including hardware and software ones.

Apple has made a lot of internal changes to its iOS 10 apps, including a redesign and new features for different apps such as the Messages App, the Maps, the Photos app, the Music App etc.

You can click here to learn more about the new features and how to get iOS 10 on your device.

But Apple has not changed only the software of its device but has made some drastic changes on the outside parts of the phone. iPhone 7 and 7 Plus have both a new camera, removed antenna lines and a completely new home button. The Apple has removed the traditional iOS’s devices home button and has replaced it with just a programmed Touch ID with Force Touch which acts like a home button when you try to press it.

With this big change, a lot of other things have changed. One of them is the way you put your phone into DFU Mode or Force Restarts your iPhone.

iPhone is just a machine and sometimes it stop responding and you have to Soft Reset it in order to make it work again.

The traditional way for years was to hold down the home button and you had to combine the pressed home button with some other external buttons and the force restart was performed but not anymore.

With the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus no longer having the Home Button, there is no way you can press the “force-touch” enabled home button when your phone is stuck.

So, there is a new way to perform a force restart and to enter your iPhone into DFU Mode. Both these are essential parts of any troubleshooting process, so it’s recommended to know them.

So, I am going to show you How to Force Restart iPhone 7 and How to Enter iPhone 7 into DFU Mode.

How to Force Restart iPhone 7

In order to force restart iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus, you just press and hold the power button and the down volume button simultaneously for about 8-10 seconds or until the Apple logo appears on your screen.

After the Apple logo appears, your device begins to reboot and you can release both buttons.

Wait for a few seconds for your device to successfully boot and you are good to go.

This was the method to Force Restart iPhone 7 or like some called it “Soft Reset iPhone 7“.

But, what if you need to enter your device into DFU Mode? Here it is how to do it:

How to Enter iPhone 7 into DFU Mode

For all the folks who don’t know what DFU Mode is or for what do you need it, then you can read this article.

As you already may know, the DFU Mode is another process which requires pressing the Home Button to activate it. But without the home button on iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus, here is the new method to activate it:

1. Plug your device into your computer using the lightning cable and open iTunes.

2. Now, press and hold the power button and the volume down button simultaneously until the display goes dark.

3. After your screen goes black, you can release the power button but continue to hold down the volume down button until a pop-up appears on iTunes saying that your iPhone is in Recovery Mode.

how-to-force-restart-enter-dfu-mode-on-iphone-7-1

Note: If the screen is still black, then you are actually in DFU Mode, not Recovery Mode. If you see still an Apple Logo or a Connect to iTunes Logo, then you have to begin again to step 1 because you goofed up the steps.

If you have successfully entered into Recovery Mode, then you are ready to perform a clean install to the latest iOS Version.

If you want to exit the DFU Mode after this process, all you need to do is to hold down the power button and the volume down button for a couple of seconds until the Apple Logo appears and your device reboot.

These are the steps on How to Enter iPhone 7 into DFU Mode.

How to Download & Install iOS 10 Update to iPhone, iPad or iPod

How to Install iOS 10 on iPhone and iPad With & Without iTunes

As I mentioned before, there are two available methods to get iOS 10 update on iPhone or iPad. The first one is OTA method, which means Over-The-Air and you only need an internet connection on your iOS device and the second one is using iTunes and your computer. I will show you both methods down below.

How to Install iOS 10 Update Over The Air (OTA):

Before you start applying this method, please make sure you have at least 50% battery left on your device because the iOS 10 is a huge file and may take some time to download and install, depending on your internet connection speed and Apple’s Servers Status.

Also, I recommend you to use a WiFi internet connection instead of cellular data because the update is more than 1GB, so additional data fees may apply if you use your cellular connection.

After you make sure that you have the required level of battery, open the Settings App on your device and go to General – Software Update. Wait for a couple of seconds until the iOS checks for new updates and the iOS 10 Update should appear to be installed.

Tap on the Download Option to download the iOS 10 update and wait for the downloading to be completed. After the download is complete, you can begin the installation process by tapping on the Install Option.

Note: You can use your device while it is downloading the iOS 10 update. You will receive a notification when the download is complete and the update is ready for installation. After you receive the notification, just go again to Settings – General – Software Update and tap on the Install Method.

How to Install iOS 10 Update using iTunes:

The second method of installing the iOS 10 Update is by using iTunes on your computer.

In order to download iOS 10 update using iTunes, you have to make sure that you have the latest iTunes version. Open iTunes and then click on the Menu Bar and click on Check for Update option.

After you install the latest iTunes, you are good to go with the download and install iOS 10 Update process.

Step 1: Connect your iOS device to your computer using the USB Lightning Cable and wait for a couple of seconds for iTunes to recognize your device.

Step 2: Then, click on the iPhone device icon to the left side of the iTunes.

Step 3: Now, click on the “Check for Update” Option in the General Tab. If the iOS 10 update is available, the iTunes will ask you if you would like to automatically download and update to iOS 10.

Step 4: After you confirm your choice, wait for the iOS 10 to be downloaded and then it will begin the installing process automatically to your device.

Note: Again, this may take a few mins to an hour, depending on Apple’s Servers and your Internet Connection Speed.

After the download and install process is finished, you will have to restore your data and files back on your device and then you are good to go.
